Sharing practical experience on decommissioning allows chlorine producers to reduce the health and environmental impact of such operation:
o Decommissioning of mercury chlor-alkali plants
o Management of mercury contaminated sites
o Country Initiatives on chlor-alkali technology changeover: Sao Paolo, Brazil

A document on the Economics of Conversion was prepared by the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership, grouping authorities, environmental and industrial NGOs and is available also on the UNEP website. Whilst such transition projects are capital intensive, membrane plants offer considerably lower energy costs.
